Archaeological area

At the PAAR (Field Archeological Park), you can discover some of the most beautiful and significant petroglyphs in Galicia, such as the Laxe dos Carballos or the Outeiro dos Cogoludos. The nearly 22 hectares of the Park constitute an exceptional archaeological reserve, where the landscape's past appearance has been restored thanks to respectful environmental work.

An itinerary over 3 kilometers long, dotted with rest areas and fountains, traverses an extraordinary cultural landscape characterized by a high density of petroglyphs. Along this path, it is possible to contemplate the primary motifs and scenes depicted in Galician rock carvings.

To make viewing easier, wooden platforms have been installed to protect the rocks while providing superior vantage points. Near the Visitor Center, playful and educational elements—such as petroglyph reproductions and a steel labyrinth—invite interaction and discovery.

Village

Travel 4,000 years back in time and discover daily life in a Bronze Age settlement. At PAAR, we have recreated a small village featuring huts, storage structures, and animal pens, using the same materials as the ancient inhabitants. This is experimental archaeology designed to help you learn about prehistoric life.

Furthermore, within the settlement grounds, you can view two original cists, enduring witnesses to death in prehistory. These stone burial structures come from the archaeological sites of Vilamerelle (Palas de Rei) and Guidoiro Areoso (Illa de Arousa).

The project

The Campo Lameiro Rock Art Archaeological Park (PAAR) is much more than a collection of petroglyphs. It is a profound intervention in the territory, designed by the firm RVR Arquitectos—winner of the competition held by the Xunta de Galicia—with the aim of harmonizing heritage protection and the visitor experience.

Its privileged location, on a mountainous spur surrounded by valleys, required an intervention that respected the topography and native vegetation. Environmental recovery was a central pillar: invasive species such as eucalyptus were removed, the growth of deciduous trees was encouraged, and a network of paths was created to allow the petroglyphs to be discovered in a natural way.

The result is a landscape where the rock art integrates perfectly with its surroundings, revealing the visual and symbolic connections between the rocks and the territory.

The CIDAR: A rock emerging from the earth.

The Rock Art Interpretation and Documentation Center (CIDAR), also designed by RVR Arquitectos, is a key piece of this project. The building, inaugurated in 2011, was conceived as an 'antechamber' to the Archaeological Park—a space that prepares the visitor for an immersion into prehistory

Its architecture stands out for its integration into the landscape. The building, clad in granite slabs, mimics a rock emerging from the ground, camouflaging itself within the scenery. Inside, the dim light and the sounds of nature create an atmosphere that evokes the lives of the site’s ancient inhabitants.

The center is organized around a large covered portico, which distributes the spaces for exhibition, research, administration, workshops, and services. The exhibition areas, partially underground, enhance the sensory experience by prioritizing touch and sound over sight.
